In Memory

Helen Wright (Granger)

Helen Wright (Granger)

I met Helen freshman year - I think it was when we took an intro to philosophy course together. I had never met anyone quite like Helen. She was direct and frank and challenged me and all my beliefs and values, but I found her very interesting and fun, and enjoyed discussing ideas with her. When we were together on Hollins Abroad, and later, we continued to have that very direct kind of "no BS" friendship. I always wished that we could have connected in adult life.
~Mimi McConnell Hutton

We always pronounced Helen's name the French way. Helen was an unofficial guru for many of us. Together, we drove across country after graduation with Helen's cats in the back seat. It was how she learned to drive a stick shift.
~Mandy Potterfield

At Hollins, since Helen and I shared the same last name, we were often seated next to each other. She would always greet me, "Hello, little Wright," to which I would reply, "Hello, big Wright." Helen's blend of international sophistication and a mischievous undercurrent made her irresistible.
~Nancy Wright Slain

Helen studied with Marianne Williamson and married New York playwright, Percy Granger, who died in 1997. Later, she changed her first name to MariElena. Below is her obituary from The New York Times:
